On the hospital steps: royal baby arrivals
With the happy news that the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have just welcomed their new baby boy, we look back at royal deliveries from the archive. Hospitals weren’t always the way, though – the Queen herself was born at her private family home at the time, 17 Bruton Street, and gave birth to Charles, Andrew and Edward in Buckingham Palace, and Princess Anne at Clarence House. And it was the Duke of Edinburgh who broke royal protocol by attending the birth of their youngest, Edward; prior to this, the father was not present during delivery. The Prince of Wales was present at both hospital births of William and Harry.
